The first real sign of Christmas in Reykjavik

We always start decorating earlier and earlier for Christmas in Iceland. But the first real indicator of Christmas drawing near is when the city of Reykjavik gathers at Austurvöllur park, only 20 meters outside the hotel, to light the Oslo-tree, a christmas tree the city of Oslo gives Reykjavik as a gift each year.

This Sunday is the day we light the tree and if you are in town, you could do a lot worse than join us for some hot coffee, a song and some Christmas cheer with December around the corner the next day. Rumor has it, a couple of our 13 santas are going to sneak into town for a couple of hours that day.

The brass band starts playing at 3:30pm and the mayor will officially receive the tree from the Norwegian ambassador at 4:10pm before some singing and dancing with a strong chance of Yule lads to follow.

We are planning to decorate the reception that day and end with offering some hot cocoa and coffee outside for the people in the park, since it´s getting quite cold these days.

We´ll see you there!
