Taco Tuesdays in Iceland!

Yes, you´ve tried the lamb. Yes, you´ve tried the shark, regrettably. All types of fish and seafood under your belt already. Can we please stop selling you non-stop local fare? Why yes, we´re glad you asked. We might have just the thing for you.

Have you been to the old harbour area? Not the new old harbour where you have all the nice restaurants and the whale watching etc. The real old harbour? It´s a bit further. Behind the Maritime Museum. It´s where Valdís Ice Cream has a line all the time and it´s also where The CooCoo´s Nest has Taco Tuesdays, you guessed it, every Tuesday!

Coocoos nest by itself has been a coffee house, bistro, cult hit in Reykjavik since opening. It´s a small, rugged but cozy space and they basically work with different people for different themed nights during the week. Our favorite being taco night. Why? Because Mexican food does not really get represented all that well in Reykjavik. There have been some admirable tries but currently, there is nothing of note.

Brace yourself for some Mexican sighs. The chef is not Mexican! He´s an American with the dream of opening a taco stand in Reykjavik. His company is called Taco Fyrir Mig. It´s a play on words and literally means Taco For Me but in Icelandic at the end of every meal, a polite person will say Takk Fyrir Mig (thank you for me).

In short, we went for all three types of taco, Fish, Meat and Vegetarian and it was delightful. Even the Mexican in the group loved it, not even begrudgingly. Okay, it´s not greasy filthy mistery meat like you find in the streets of Mexico City but then again, that sort of thing wouldn´t go down well with Icelanders. This is thoughtful cuisine, prepared with love on home made tortillas. A truly enjoyable experience with a nice Einstök Brew on draught. The price doesn´t pinch either. The three tacos are 1.790isk and they are plenty to keep you going. If not, add another until you´re full. We can´t wait for the truck/stand to open! ;)
